The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Armor) Jonathan Walter Searles, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Searles distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving with Military Assistance Command, Vietnam as Regional Advisor in IV Corps, Republic of Vietnam, in action against the enemy on 22 January 1969. While serving as Senior Advisor to a South Vietnamese Ranger Battalion, Major Searles exposed himself to repeated enemy crossfire to take a position in open terrain ahead of his own front lines. From that position he spotted targets and called in air strikes on the enemy, enabling the South Vietnamese unit to secure the position. Major Searles unqualified courage and willingness to exposed himself to intense hostile fire throughout the day and night contributed immeasurably to the success of the tacit tactical mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
