Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 149 (June 15, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Elmer A. Seaman (ASN: RA-37002419), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of 2d Reconnaissance Company, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 February 1951, in the vicinity of Chuam-Ni, Korea. On that date, the 2d Reconnaissance Company and Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, had established blocking positions at a road junction. At 0445 hours, these positions were attacked by a large enemy force armed with small arms, automatic weapons, and mortars. Sergeant Seaman was controlling and directing the fire of his section in the perimeter when he noticed several enemy machine guns being set up directly in front of his positions. Exposing himself to intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire he detached a light machine gun from its broken tripod and firing the gun from the hip, destroyed hostile machine gun positions before he was knocked down as a result of leg wounds. He continued to fire at the enemy until the order was given to withdraw. His heroic action accounted for at least 20 enemy casualties in addition to the three machine guns he knocked out. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Seaman reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
