Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 182 (June 8, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Robert J. Scully (ASN: RA-12277981), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 3rd Ranger Infantry Company (Airborne), 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the action near Kantonghyon, Korea, on 11 April 1951, the First Platoon of the Third Ranger Company entered into a bayonet charge against a fortified enemy position which was holding up the advance of the company. A heavy and prolonged grenade fight ensued. Private Scully, the platoon radio operator, entered into this bayonet assault and grenade battle in spite of the burdensome radio which he carried on his back. After the position had been secured, Private Scully gave his own weapon to a man who had lost a weapon in the fight on the hill. He continued to advance with the company for another two kilometers through sporadic mortar, rifle and sniper fire performing his duties as radio operator in a superb manner despite a wound which he received at this time. The gallant actions of Private Scully reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
