The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) David Weldon Scogin (Scoggins) (ASN: 0-2212012), United States Army, for gallantry in action Company H, 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action along the Naktong River, Korea, on 7 August 1950. His battalion, launching an attack, was met by the enemy who had simultaneously attacked. During the fierce fight which followed he constantly exposed himself to heavy enemy fire while directing the fire of his platoon. Unable to advance, in the face of Lieutenant Scogin’s directed fire, the enemy attempted to move around the flank. Anticipating this maneuver he covered the area with fire of such intensity that the advance again was halted and the enemy repulsed. The enemy, regrouping, again assaulted the position in such overwhelming numbers that a withdrawal to more tenable positions was ordered. Completely unmindful of his own safety he elected to remain in position to cover the withdrawal. In this gallant action Lieutenant Scogin was killed. His courageous actions, complete devotion to duty and fearless leadership reflect the greatest credit on himself and the United States Infantry.
