Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 20 (January 25, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Donald J. Schweer (ASN: RA-12314352), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 November 1950, in the vicinity of Sinjung, Korea. On that date, Sergeant Schweer was a member of a group which was forced to withdraw to escape annihilation by a numerically superior enemy. The route of withdrawal was cut off by the enemy who had established a roadblock consisting of two machine guns supported by small arms fire. Sergeant Schweer voluntarily and with complete indifference for his personal safety exposed himself to heavy hostile fire and dashed forward in a single-handed assault of the hostile emplacements. He continued his intrepid charge under point blank machine gun fire, until he was within fifteen feet of the enemy guns. From this position he hurled hand grenades until he had destroyed both machine guns and their crews. His heroic action shattered the roadblock, allowing his comrades to eliminate the remaining enemy riflemen and continue their withdrawal in safety. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Sergeant Schweer reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
