The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Private First Class] Stanley S. Schultz (ASN: ER-57504059), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 7 January 1951, in the vicinity of Wonju, Korea. On that date, Sergeant Schultz’s platoon had the mission of defending the city of Wonju from a numerically superior enemy force. When ordered to make an orderly withdrawal in the course of the action, Sergeant Schultz, with utter disregard for his own safety, exposed himself to the intense enemy fire and reorganized his platoon. He then ordered his men to fix bayonets and led the platoon in a counterattack, closing with the enemy in hand-to-hand combat. His platoon inflicted heavy casualties upon the enemy and forced the remainder to flee in panic. Under his inspiring leadership the platoon thus succeeded in firmly securing the company positions. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Schultz reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
