The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Walter Schroeder, Jr. (ASN: RA-17252043), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 4 September 1950, near Chirwon, Korea, a patrol led by Sergeant Schroeder was returning to the company area when a group of enemy was observed moving toward an observation post previously used by friendly forces. Realizing that his company would be subjected to deadly crossfire if the hostile force occupied the observation post, he quickly deployed his patrol to intercept the enemy. Placing his men in positions of comparative safety, he moved to an exposed position and delivered deadly fire on the foe. So effective was his delivery and direction of fire that the hostile group was completely routed. Sergeant Schroeder’s intrepid leadership, military skill and devotion to duty eliminated a serious threat to the security of his company’s positions and reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
