The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant George Lovell Banks, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 25 November 1863, while serving with Company C, 15th Indiana Infantry, in action at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee. As Color Bearer, Sergeant Banks led his regiment in the assault, and, though wounded, carried the flag forward to the enemy’s works, where he was again wounded. In a brigade of eight regiments this flag was the first planted on the parapet.
