The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Jack B. Schrickel (ASN: RA-15270889), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 November 1950, near Unsan, Korea. When the battalion defensive perimeter was flanked and frontally assaulted by a numerically superior enemy force, a withdrawal was ordered. As Private Schrickel’s squad arrived at the pre-arranged assembly area, he noticed that one of his comrades was missing. Despite the danger involved, he returned to the area, now overrun by enemy troops, in search for the soldier. Although constantly drawing hostile fire, Private Schrickel persisted in his endeavor until he found the member of his squad who was seriously wounded. Carrying the man through fire to the assembly area, he found that the battalion had already withdrawn to another location. Despite the wounded soldier’s request that he leave him and save his own life, Private Schrickel refused and proceeded to struggle mile after mile over the rugged terrain, wading hip-deep in a freezing river, carrying the wounded man over his shoulder. Cold and near exhaustion, Private Schrickel finally reached friendly lines eight hours later, and the wounded man was evacuated to a hospital for treatment. The brave and selfless action of Private Schrickel reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
