Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 349 (January 11, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Terry J. Ward (ASN: US-56650477), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 22 December 1968, while serving with Company B, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. Elements of the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry came under a massive attack by a regimental size communist force. The Viet Cong attack was initiated by a devastating mortar, RPG, and rocket barrage followed by human wave assaults. At one point during the battle, the friendly forces began to run dangerously low on ammunition. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private Ward exposed himself to the holocaust of exploding hostile projectiles as he moved throughout the bullet swept area, secured the desperately needed ammunition and distributed it to his comrades. Returning to his exposed position, Private Ward was fatally wounded while placing effective fire on the insurgents. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and defeat of the enemy force. Private Ward’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
