The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James Henry Scholtz (ASN: 0-59349), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with an Infantry Company of the 5th Cavalry (Infantry) Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy near Waegwan, Korea on 4 September 1950. While battling enemy North Koreans for critical high ground, with great risk to his own life, First Lieutenant Scholtz exposed himself to the deadly enemy mortar and anti-tank barrages to encourage his men and better direct their fire upon enemy concentrations. When one of his machinegunners was severely wounded, First Lieutenant Scholtz unhesitatingly manned the gun and courageously continued to fire upon the advancing fanatical horde. This intrepid leader, although manning a weapon himself, continued to direct the efforts of his platoon and to fire the machine gun and a rocket launcher, whichever seemed most effective at the time, until he himself was seriously wounded. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Scholtz, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
