The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Frank J. Scheltens (ASN: US-55064141), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date, during an assault upon enemy positions, Private Scheltens, continually exposed himself to intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire to carry ammunition to the company’s mortar unit. In the course of the attack, Private Scheltens was painfully wounded by mortar fragments, but refused evacuation and insisted on continuing to carry the badly needed ammunition. Later, while crossing an exposed position with ammunition, he was fatally wounded by enemy automatic weapons fire. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Scheltens on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
