Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 79 (April 11, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) George H. Schappaugh (ASN: 0-532286), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 72d Tank Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On the morning of that date he was the leader of a tank platoon in support of a rifle company which was under attack by a numerically superior enemy force. When the company was forced to withdraw to avoid encirclement, Lieutenant Schappaugh began fighting a vicious delaying action to cover the withdrawal. During this action his radio communications failed and, despite the heavy enemy fire, he dismounted and moved from one tank to another shouting orders to the crews. Although the platoon was surrounded five times by the enemy, Lieutenant Schappaugh succeeded in penetrating the enemy lines and establishing new positions. His courage and inspiring leadership enabled his men to destroy an enemy tank and to inflict great casualties upon the enemy. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Schappaugh reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
