Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 349 (July 23, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Angelo M. Santoro (ASN: 0-1822196), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 20 September 1950, in the vicinity of Annui, Korea. Captain Santoro was attached to the 23d Infantry Regiment as an artillery liaison officer while that unit was defending its perimeter against a fierce enemy attack. The command post of the 3d Battalion received several direct hits which wounded the commanding officer, and killed and wounded several other personnel. Captain Santoro fearlessly dashed into the impact area to administer aid to the wounded men and to remove them to the battalion aid station. Finding most of the aid personnel dead and wounded as a result of a direct hit on the aid station, he drove through the devastating enemy fire to obtain medical aid from his own battalion. The courageous actions of Captain Santoro were responsible for saving the lives of his comrades. The gallantry in action displayed by Captain Santoro reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
