Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 188 (June 13, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Juan H. Santiago (ASN: US-50100079), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 31 March 1951, as Company F was attacking enemy positions on Hill 398, the leading elements came under intense enemy grenade and automatic weapons fire. Private Santiago, a messenger in the rear area, voluntarily left the comparative safety of the rear and dashed to the most forward position where he engaged the enemy by throwing grenades and firing his weapon. Exhausting his supply of grenades, he made repeated trips to the rear of the platoon to procure more all of which he used with telling effect on the enemy. When a squad on his right initiated an assault, he voluntarily joined it in the attack and was wounded during the assault. The gallantry and aggressiveness displayed by Private Santiago reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
