The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Field Artillery) John H. Sanguinetti (ASN: 0-361561), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 15th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On the morning of this date he was attached to a rifle company for liaison and observation purposes. The rifle company was in a defensive position which had been surrounded by the enemy and was being subjected to heavy enemy artillery and mortar fire. Despite the intense fire he remained by his telephone, in an exposed position, attempting to keep contact with his battalion and procure artillery fire to repulse the enemy attack. When his telephone was destroyed he moved to a radio, and remained with that until that also, was destroyed. When it became evident that the position had been surrounded, he assumed command of part of a defensive perimeter, moving from one position to another, redistributing ammunition and reassuring the men who had been wounded. His cool example and total disregard for his safety bolstered the morale of his men to such an extent that the position was held for some time against the enemy attacks. When the position eventually became untenable, he organized his group into a platoon, and commenced a withdrawing action. At one point when the group was ambushed, he attacked the enemy with the help of another man, killing two of them and routing the others which enabled his platoon to continue to the safety of friendly lines. Major Sanguinetti’s gallant actions, display of outstanding leadership, and utter disregard for his personal safety, reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
