The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jesse C. Sanford, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 159th Field Artillery Battalion, 25th Infantry Division. Near Haman, Korea, on 4 September 1950, a friendly unit adjacent to Sergeant Sanford’s battery was subjected to strong hostile attack. Despite the proximity of the encircling enemy, he moved through the deadly fire to aid in evacuating the wounded. Although a casualty himself during the sharp action, he continued his efforts until all his wounded comrades had been carried to a place of safety. Sergeant Sanford’s courage, determination and selfless devotion to his fellow soldiers reflect great credit on himself, his unit and the American Soldier.
