The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Leo R. Sandoval, United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date Company C was in the attack against a well fortified enemy hill. Corporal Sandoval, a squad leader, was given the mission of leading his squad against a group of enemy bunkers which were surrounded by land mines. As the attack materialized many of the men, including Corporal Sandoval were wounded. Disregarding his painful wound and safety, he remained with his squad, directing the few remaining men to gather as many grenades as possible and led them forward. Corporal Sandoval, using an automatic rifle, set down an accurate base of covering fire with so inspired his men that they ferociously attacked the enemy with grenades and successfully accomplished their mission. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Sandoval reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
