Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 90 (November 18, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Jack D. Sanders (ASN: 0-62837), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. Overwhelming enemy forces had breached the lines of Lieutenant Sanders’ battalion and had surrounded his platoon. Repeatedly the enemy launched attacks in an effort to destroy the platoon. During all these assaults Lieutenant Sanders calmly and skillfully held his unit in position, inspiring his outnumbered men with his own courage. In addition to directing the defensive tactics of his platoon he voluntarily acted as forward observer for the supporting artillery and adjusted artillery fire on enemy troops with deadly effect. Manifesting complete indifference for his personal safety he held a position at his forward observation post until he was ordered to withdraw. Having carefully selected his route of withdrawal he maneuvered his platoon between two strong enemy forces and successfully reached the new battalion defensive positions. The gallantry, tactical ability and high degree of leadership displayed by Lieutenant Sanders on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service.
