Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 29 (January 15, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Charles R. Sanders (ASN: 0-1336966), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 3 February 1951, as Company L was leading an attack by the 3d Battalion on the strategically important Hill 319, near Yongin, Korea, the Company Commander was seriously wounded. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Captain Sanders, Company Executive Officer, unhesitatingly assumed command and began reorganizing the company with only one officer and a few key non-commissioned officers to support him. Exposing himself to enemy fire, Captain Sanders courageously performed the duties of Company Commander, platoon leader and squad leader by encouraging and leading his men forward against the determined foe until seriously wounded by hostile mortar fire. The gallantry and vigorous leadership displayed by Captain Sanders reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
