The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Elmer H. Sand (ASN: US-55035044), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date, Company A had the mission of attacking a well fortified enemy-held hill. As the unit advanced it was suddenly subjected to intense enemy grenades, small arms, and mortar fire. Many friendly casualties incurred during this action. Corporal Sand, upon observing a wounded comrade, left his position of cover to render aid and with the assistance of another comrade, carried the wounded toward safety. When only a few feet from cover, Corporal Sand was fatally wounded by enemy fire. The gallantry in action demonstrated by Corporal Sand reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
