The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Steve Sanchez (ASN: RA-19370180), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 17 May 1951, in the vicinity of P’ungch-on-ni, Korea. His company was bearing the brunt of fanatical enemy attacks, and the enemy had penetrated to the main defense lines, surrounding the bunker occupied by Corporal Sanchez. Though seriously wounded, he remained in his position for six hours, beating off the attacking enemy hordes at close range. Ignoring his painful wounds, he refused to be evacuated until the action was over, and even then left under protest. The gallantry in action and devotion displayed by Corporal Sanchez on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
