The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Elwyn F. Samuelson (ASN: 0-981992), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 March 1951, in the vicinity of Uijongbu, Korea, Company C had the mission of attacking and seizing Hill 155, which was defended by a firmly entrenched enemy. Lieutenant Samuelson, continuously under enemy mortar and small arms fire, led his platoon approximately four hundred yards up the rugged hill. While proceeding alone to the position he had selected from which to launch the platoon assault, he came under sniper fire. Returning to the platoon position, Lieutenant Samuelson secured a sniper’s rifle and, while exposed to fire, skillfully shot and killed three enemy snipers. The enemy then focused all its fire power on Lieutenant Samuelson and hurled approximately fifty grenades at his position. Four grenades exploded within a few feet of Lieutenant Samuelson, severely wounding him and forcing him to relinquish his command to the platoon sergeant. Although in great pain, he remained with the platoon base of fire and expertly directed supporting fire for the assault echelon. Completely exposed to enemy fire, he was again wounded but remained with the unit until the objective was secured. Lieutenant Samuelson’s outstanding leadership, gallantry, and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
