The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John A. Salvatore, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during a counterattack against enemy positions on Hill 700, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 12 March 1944. Displaying outstanding courage and resourcefulness, he directed his platoon in an assault on heavily defended Japanese strongpoints. Although seriously wounded during the advance, Lieutenant Salvatore exhibited an indomitable fighting spirit by retaining command of his troops as they stormed a pillbox. He personally tossed well-aimed hand grenades at the strongpoints until he was wounded. His bravery and willingness to continue in action, although weakened by his wounds, were an inspiration to his men. Lieutenant Salvatore’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
