The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Edward T. Salhany (ASN: 0-410384), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 5 August 1943 during the New Georgia Campaign. When troops were halted in their advance by a heavy concentration of enemy fire, Captain Salhany climbed on top of a machine gun pillbox at great jeopardy to his personal safety. He directed the firing of 395 rounds of ammunition by his heavy weapons company with such accuracy that hostile positions were completely demolished. Thus, by his personal courage and aggressive action, Captain Salhany enabled the troops to continue the advance and successfully accomplish their mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
