Headquarters, 4th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 4192 (July 26, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Frank E. Spink (ASN: US-67159493), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Spink distinguished himself while serving as a Squad Leader with Company B, 1st Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On 13 June 1968, Sergeant Spink’s company was in a defensive perimeter near Dak Pek when it came under attack by two companies of North Vietnamese Regulars. During the action Sergeant Spink noticed movement in front of his perimeter. He warned the rest of the company and fired on the attacking enemy, until he was severely injured by a rocket which exploded on his bunker. In spite of his painful and serious wounds Sergeant Spink continued to place suppressive fire on the enemy. He persisted in defending his sector of the perimeter until his injuries caused him to lose consciousness. Upon his evacuation to the command post he regained consciousness and gave encouragement to casualties who were less seriously wounded than he. Subsequently he briefed the commanding officer on the situation along his side of the perimeter. His brave, determined actions contributed greatly to his company’s mission and set a worthy example to his men. Sergeant Spink’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
