Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 191 (May 22, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] John Sabol (ASN: RA-12334132), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 23 November 1951, Company G was engaged in a vicious struggle with the enemy to retain possession of Hill 355 near Kowang-San, Korea. Due to a terrific and overpowering onslaught by the foe, elements of the company were forced to withdraw to neighboring high ground. During the withdrawal it was learned that one man, too seriously wounded to walk, had been left behind. Even though Private Sabol, an aid man, was not attached to the platoon of which the wounded man was a member, he immediately left his position of comparative safety and fearlessly crossed the fire swept terrain of the forward slope. Although at one time he was knocked off his feet and momentarily rendered unconscious by a nearby mortar blast, Private Sabol regained his footing and undauntedly continued forward until he was at the side of the wounded soldier. Despite the devastating enemy fire, he carefully applied emergency dressings and dragged the wounded man to higher ground, where other friendly troops assisted in carrying him to safety. Private Sabol’s heroic initiative and untiring devotion to duty were instrumental in saving the life of a fellow soldier and reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
