Brigadier General Ryder distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Assistant Division Commander of the 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action against the enemy in 1968. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Brigadier General Ryder, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Charles Wolcott Ryder, Jr. (ASN: 0-24951), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division in action against the enemy on 19 and 20 November 1944 in the vicinity of Bockange, France. Having observed an enemy convoy in the town, he immediately signaled tanks carrying infantrymen to advance. From a commanding position, Captain Ryder directed tank fire which stopped the entire enemy convoy. He then, at risk of his life, led the tanks and infantry in an attack on the town in which four enemy were killed, two wounded and 35 captured. The next day while again in advance of the column, Captain Ryder advanced through direct enemy rocket fire, killed one man of the enemy bazooka team and caused the other members to flee. Captain Ryder’s gallantry was in accordance with high military tradition.
