Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 80 (April 12, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal George D. Russ (ASN: RA-13320513), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 23 September 1950 the vicinity of Chogong-ni, Korea. Company L was in defensive positions on high ground and Corporal Russ’ platoon had been given the mission of providing security for the company command post. At approximately 1130 hours, the position came under intense automatic weapons and small arms fire from an advancing, numerically superior enemy force. Fully exposed to the withering hostile fire, Corporal Russ stood upright in his foxhole and began hurling hand grenades at the assaulting enemy, causing great casualties among them. Disregarding his personal danger, he fearlessly continued his action until he had thrown 35 hand grenades and had single-handedly halted the hostile assault. The gallantry and tenacity under fire displayed by Corporal Russ reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
