The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Avery H. Runions (ASN: ER-57219536), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 August 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On this date Company G was engaged in a desperate struggle with an enemy force of overwhelming odds. The advancing enemy force disorganized his platoon by forcing it from positions. Sergeant Runions, assistant platoon sergeant, undaunted by the enemy fire, reorganized the depleted unit. Displaying outstanding courage and leadership, he led his platoon upon the enemy positions in such an aggressive manner that the enemy defenses were completely disrupted and numerous casualties were inflicted upon the enemy. During the final stage of the advance, Sergeant Runions suffered a severe concussion from an enemy mortar shell burst, but refused to leave his unit until the enemy position had been secured. His aggressive and outstanding leadership were a constant inspiration to his comrades. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Runions reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
