    Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 236 (1951), Amended by G. O. 430 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Jose P. Ruiz (ASN: ER-18253268), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 21 May 1951, in the vicinity of Sangny-un-gal, Korea. On that day Company G was being attacked by fanatical, numerically superior enemy force. As the attacks continued with added ferocity, Sergeant Ruiz, disregarding personal safety, leaped from his position throwing grenades and firing his rifle into the enemy hordes. This inspired the rest of the men in his squad and they followed him in the attack on the enemy. This surprise move so confused and disorganized the enemy that their attack was completely disrupted. Sergeant Ruiz’s actions were instrumental in the successful completion of the mission and accounted for numerous enemy dead and wounded. His gallantry reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
