The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Othel Harley Rowe (ASN: RA-14333363), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On the afternoon of that date he was leader of a 57-mm./ recoilless rifle squad, while his unit was engaged in battle with a large enemy force. When machine gun and mortar fire was unable to neutralize hostile emplacements, Corporal Rowe advanced with his weapon under extremely heavy enemy fire to a position in front of the riflemen. From his vantage point, he took the enemy under fire, inflicting heavy casualties upon them. After firing approximately 20 rounds, he was struck and killed by enemy small arms fire. His courageous action greatly reduced the enemy fire and relieved his company form heavy enemy pressure. The gallantry displayed by Corporal Rowe reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
