The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Floyd H. Rowden, Jr. (ASN: RA-18124519), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 23 August 1950 near Taegu, Korea. Sergeant Rowden was a member of a rifle platoon which was attacking a numerically superior, well-entrenched enemy force. The platoon was subjected to heavy artillery and mortar fire, which caused numerous casualties and destroyed all communications. In order to call for supporting fire, Sergeant Rowden dashed through the intense hostile fire falling in the area and made his way back to the company command post. After securing the necessary fire support, he returned to his platoon and discovered that a squad leader was wounded forward of the position. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he crawled forward under close range enemy fire and assisted the wounded soldier to safety. Later in the action, he again braved hostile fire in order to effect a re-supply of ammunition within the platoon. When he received orders to withdraw, he supervised the evacuation of the wounded and brought his unit out in an orderly withdrawal. When the company later seized the platoon’s position, 35 enemy dead were found in the area, casualties of the mortar fire which he had called for. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Rowden reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
