The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant James L. Roth (ASN: RA-20533933), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company [then Company C], 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 15 and 16 August 1950, in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On the night of 15 August his company was in defensive positions on Clover Leaf Hill, guarding the approach to the main supply route. The Company was subjected to five fanatical enemy attacks, and suffered heavy casualties while attempting to repulse the savage and determined enemy and losing many non-commissioned officers and officers. When the right flank of the company was threatened by the enemy, Sergeant Roth went forward under intense enemy fire to direct the fire of the men and to re-supply them with ammunition. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Roth distributed ammunition taken from wounded men and then carried the wounded to safety. At dawn, he organized litter carrying parties and supervised the evacuation of the wounded and again re-supplied hard-pressed comrades with ammunition. When two wounded soldiers came under intense enemy fire, he went forward without hesitation and assisted them to safety. The sustained courage, initiative and devotion to fallen comrades displayed by Sergeant Roth reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
