The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Donald R. Roth (ASN: RA-16306993), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company M, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 August 1951 in the vicinity of Hoam, Korea. On this date Corporal Roth’s machine gun squad was delivering overhead supporting fire for the attacking rifle units. Taking complete charge of this task, he placed the men in his squad so they were all in safe positions and could still deliver the maximum fire power on the enemy. On the night of 26 August, Corporal Roth left his position of comparative safety and advanced through intense fire to evacuate many of his wounded comrades. The accurate and effective fire furnished by Corporal Roth and his squad materially aided in the successful completion of the mission. His courageous evacuation of the wounded undoubtedly saved many of the lives of his comrades who might have otherwise died. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Roth reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
