Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 205 (June 12, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Joseph D. Rossi (ASN: ER-42088598), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 17 March 1953 in the vicinity of Um-Dong, North Korea. On that date, Sergeant Rossi was a member of a platoon whose mission was to counterattack and neutralize enemy forces which had overrun friendly positions. While advancing in the assault, the Platoon Leader was wounded by the intense enemy mortar fire that was sweeping the area. Sergeant Rossi then assumed command and led the element through the fire swept area to the overrun positions. Under his shrewd leadership, the platoon cleared the trenches and consolidated and held the hard won positions. He not only directed and encouraged his men, but utilized his own weapon and grenades in helping to inflict many casualties upon the enemy. The gallantry in action and inspirational leadership exhibited by Sergeant Rossi on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
