The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Joseph N. Rossano (ASN: US-51150516), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 and 14 August 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon Korea. At that time Private Rossano was a member of an Infantry platoon which was assaulting an enemy held emplacement. Private Rossano fearlessly and courageously followed his comrades into battle. When the first advance was halted by a heavy volume of enemy mortar fire, Private Rossano, utterly disregarding personal safety, continued up the hill. With the use of hand grenades, he destroyed the first bunker and silenced two machine guns, thereby removing a great hazard to his comrades. During his heroic attack, Private Rossano was fatally wounded by enemy small arms fire. He made the supreme sacrifice for the welfare of his comrades and the success of the mission. The selfless devotion to duty and the heroism in action displayed by Private Rossano reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
