The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant John L. Casey (ASN: 65625), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chateau-Thierry, France, 23 July 1918. After seeing three runners shot down while trying to cross an open field through violent machine-gun fire to establish liaison with a regiment five hundred yards away on his left, Sergeant Casey undertook the same mission and successfully accomplished it.
