The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James L. Rosenbalm (ASN: 0-2035148), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 October 1951 in the vicinity of Tondul, Korea. On this date Company I had the mission of attacking and securing strongly fortified enemy positions. As the unit neared its objective, intense hostile mortar, automatic weapons and small arms fire halted its advance. Lieutenant Rosenbalm, realizing that the only way to prevent encirclement was to assault the enemy and secure the hill, exposed himself to the heavy concentration of enemy fire to rally his men into the attack. Advancing to within a few feet of the enemy bunkers, Lieutenant Rosenbalm destroyed the emplacements with grenades while inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. Inspired by his dauntless courage, the men of his unit completely overran the enemy positions and accomplished their mission successfully. The gallantry in action and outstanding leadership displayed by Lieutenant Rosenbalm on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
