The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph S. Rose (ASN: RA-19383919), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. In the early morning hours of 31 July 1952, Company B was assigned the mission of recapturing an enemy-held outpost, referred to as “Kelly”, in the vicinity of Koyang-dae, Korea. As the elements of the friendly unit of which Private Rose was assigned as a medical aid man, approached their objective, they were subjected to intense enemy machine gun, mortar and artillery fire, inflicting numerous casualties among them. Immediately and with complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Rose oblivious to the lethal hostile fire, quickly moved about the shrapnel-torn area rendering medical aid to the wounded men of his platoon. Upon learning that the majority of the other aid men of his company were wounded, he fearlessly exposed himself to murderous enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire as he advanced from one platoon to another feverishly treating and evacuating the casualties. When another friendly unit sustained numerous casualties while en route to relieve his company, Private Rose unhesitatingly provided medical assistance to both units until his supply of medical equipment became exhausted. Then with grim determination he rushed to the forward aid station, secured a supply of medical equipment, and returned to the battle area where he remained twelve hours under constant enemy fire, tirelessly treating and evacuating the friendly casualties. The outstanding gallantry, extreme courage and selfless actions displayed by Private Rose while rendering prompt medical aid to his fellow soldiers were instrumental in saving many friendly lives and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
