The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Robert C. Rogers (ASN: 0-98045), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 19 September 1968 while serving as Battalion Senior Advisor, 4th Battalion, 12th Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam. On that date, the battalion made heavy contact with an enemy force and Major Rogers courageously exposed himself to intense enemy fire for twelve hours as he advised and directed the efforts of his counterpart, coordinated air support elements and assisted in the recovery of wounded personnel. Totally disregarding his personal safety, Major Rogers continually traversed the fire-swept battlefield while exposed to interlocking enemy machine gun fire. He maintained continuous radio contact with helicopter gunships and approached the enemy lines to within 100 meters as he directed fire on the hostile forces. He purposely exposed himself to the enemy and accurately appraised and kept abreast of the rapidly changing combat situation. As the battle continued throughout the day and into the night, Major Rogers remained on the field, assisting his counterpart, encouraging the friendly forces and inspiring them by acts of personal bravery. Major Rogers’ conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
