Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 392 (November 13, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Norman J. Roenbaugh, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 9 July 1943. Sergeant Roenbaugh furnished protective fire to cover the men of his patrol from enemy machine gun fire as they crossed a river. He killed or seriously wounded two successive crews manning the hostile weapon. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
