Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 861 (December 15, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Richard C. Rock (ASN: 0-1332195), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 October 1951 in the vicinity of Kun-dong, Korea. On this date Company L was preparing defensive positions when the unit was subjected to intense hostile mortar, artillery, and small arms fire. Many casualties were inflicted and the friendly troops became disorganized and confused by the unexpected fire. Lieutenant Rock, a platoon leader, immediately exposed himself to the enemy fire while moving from one point to another, encouraging the men. By dispersing his men and placing them in strategic positions the company was able to ward off the enemy attack. Sighting several wounded men lying helpless in exposed positions, Lieutenant Rock, disregarding his personal safety, advanced to the sides of the wounded men and upon administering first aid assisted them to positions of safety. The inspiring leadership and gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Rock on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
