Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 299 (July 16, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] James E. Robinson (ASN: ER-55016710), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 29 January 1951, near Chipyong-ni, Korea. On that date he was a runner for a rifle company which had the mission of rescuing approximately fifty members of a unit which had been ambushed and surrounded by numerically superior enemy forces. As the unit approached the objective, it sought out the enemy and proceeded to attack. On Hill 453 the company came under heavy machine gun and small arms fire, and during this action the radio he was carrying was damaged. Knowing the importance of communications to the rear command post, Corporal Robinson, with complete disregard for his personal safety, travelled between the two units in order to relay messages. Later during the action a squad had lost contact with other units, and he volunteered to search the area in an attempt to locate it, and not only did he find the squad, but he personally guided it back to safety. His courageous actions contributed materially to the successful accomplishment of his company’s mission. The gallantry displayed by Corporal Robinson reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
