The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Ernest J. Robicheaux (ASN: 38266392), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 29 November 1943. When his platoon leader was wounded during an attack upon an enemy machine-gun emplacement, Corporal Robicheaux attempted to evacuate him. Advancing under heavy Japanese rifle and machine-gun fire he reached a position shortly removed form the injured officer. At this point he hurled a grenade at the enemy emplacement and rushed forward. In doing so, Corporal Robicheaux and shot and instantly killed, thus courageously sacrificing his life to save another’s. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Robicheaux, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
