Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 454 (October 11, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Clifford M. Roberts (ASN: RA-13258554), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 8 June 1951, A Company’s First Platoon, attacking Hill 687, near Chorwon, Korea, was pinned down by withering bursts of fire from enemy machine gun emplacements. Corporal Roberts, locating the site of the weapon which was placing the platoon in the gravest danger, voluntarily quit his covered position and began making his way toward the enemy weapon. Facing the full fury of the hostile automatic fire, he continued to crawl over the rocky ground, until he was within approximately fifteen feet of the enemy gun. He then hurled two hand grenades into the emplacement which effectively silenced the weapon. Rising to his feet, Corporal Roberts immediately rushed to the shattered position and shot the remaining members of the enemy gun crew. His aggressive removal of this obstacle enabled the platoon to advance to its objective and successfully secure it. Corporal Roberts’ resolute gallantry and unflinching determination under fire reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
