The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Clayton L. Roberts (ASN: US-56083303), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mundung-ni, Korea. On that date Company A advanced in the assault on a series of hills leading to a dominating enemy-held terrain feature. As his platoon advanced along a ridge line, Private Roberts, with fixed bayonet, led a fierce attack on hostile positions. Inspiring his comrades to greater heights of daring by his own heroic example, he continued in the assault while completely exposed to hostile observation and fire. Through his personal bravery and sustained courage, he was able to inflict heavy casualties upon the enemy. Continuing in this valiant manner, he stormed to within several feet of the objective before he fell fatally wounded by the enemy fire. His outstanding leadership and self-sacrificing devotion to duty were an inspiration to his comrades and aided immeasurably in the successful completion of his unit’s mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Roberts reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
