The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Charles L. Robb (ASN: RA-17229537), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. The 3d platoon of Company K received a heavy concentration of artillery and mortar fire followed by an enemy assault which was designed to outflank the company. Sergeant Robb, the platoon’s machine gunner who was in position on the left flank, courageously held his ground in the face of intense fire. Firing deadly bursts of fire into the enemy, he killed several and beat off all attempts by the enemy to overrun his position, thereby enabling his platoon to fall back to its secondary positions and to repel the threat to its flank. He then removed the machine gun approximately 75 yards to the rear and from this new position resumed the firefight. The enemy then concentrated their efforts to destroy his weapon and Sergeant Robb was wounded and knocked to the ground. In spite of his intense pain he clung to his machine gun, raking the assaulting enemy with devastating bursts of fire and killing at least thirty before his position was overrun. When the platoon later counterattacked and regained the lost ground, Sergeant Robb was found dead beside his machine gun. The gallantry and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Robb reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
