The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Julio Rivera (ASN: RA-10406485), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 18 September 1951, during B Company’s attack on enemy positions near Hat-o-dong, Korea, Sergeant Rivera, a recoilless rifle squad leader, repeatedly exposed himself to intense enemy fire in order to locate targets and accurately direct the fire of his unit. While so engaged, he was seriously wounded by a machine gun volley; however, refusing medical aid, he continued to direct the fire of his squad until a withdrawal order was given. Rejecting assistance, Sergeant Rivera, ordering another man to take charge of the squad, covered its withdrawal with rifle fire until mortally wounded by a bursting enemy artillery shell. The selfless gallantry and courage displayed by Sergeant Rivera reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
