The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Carl Hodson Carter (ASN: 3510054), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 56th Infantry Regiment, 7th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Rembercourt, France, October 9 – 11 November 1918. As a battalion runner, Private Carter worked unceasingly without regard of personal safety, carrying messages night and day under fire from enemy artillery and machine guns.
